The new 400-bed teaching hospital, a 60-chair dental hospital and a hi-tech rehabilitation centre are coming up in the campus of Gulf Medical University in Al Jurf, Ajman. These new projects, once operational, will add to the training and research facilities of students of the various colleges under Gulf Medical University which is on the fast-track to emerging as a research and innovation based medical university in the region.

The new hospital which is expected to be completed by 2017-18, will be the biggest private academic hospital in the region. It is envisioned as a state-of-the-art, purpose-built 400-bed smart facility, which will be the teaching hospital of Gulf Medical University. The hospital will be equipped with modern infrastructure and will also focus on medical tourism. It will be constructed over 3,20,000 square feet area, in four floors, and with over 120 clinics. The hospital will feature a special robotic pharmacy, a first of its kind in the region, and will have quaternary care facilities. The hospital will also have a full-fledged radiology department with PET-CT scan, a first of its kind in the northern Emirates. With the ultramodern facilities of the hospital, Thumbay Group aims to continue its tradition of providing high quality healthcare services at affordable costs. The hospital’s state-of-the-art laboratory will be connected to Thumbay Labs and CABRI (Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation – GMU’s world-class research and diagnostics facility) via an unmanned chute, to offer highly specialized tests and diagnostic facilities.

Among the new hospitals coming up, the ones in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Ghana are in progress, which will be announced in the next few months.

The upcoming dental facility will be a full-fledged dental hospital with over 60 chairs, which will have all dental specialties under one roof, in addition to teaching and training the students of GMU’s College of Dentistry. The dental hospital will be constructed over an area of 30,000 sq. feet in three floors. A hi-tech rehabilitation center hosting a unique state-of-the-art Sports Medicine, Hydrotherapy unit, GAIT Analysis lab and an Ergonomic simulation lab that will promote analytical and therapeutic services will be constructed in three floors in an area of 30,000 square feet. The center will provide specialized physiotherapy services in the fields of Musculoskeletal, Cardio-respiratory, Neurology, Pediatrics and Women’s Health. The center will also train the physical therapy students of the university.

“Across all our hospitals, we will bring together highly skilled professionals and the latest advancements in medical technology. They will be Centres of Excellence in various specialties, providing quaternary care,” says Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group.

The cover story is a detailed account of how Mr. Moideen’s business acumen and confidence leads GMU and the Thumbay network of hospitals on the continuous path of growth and excellence. Forbes Middle East estimates his fortunes at $1.8 billion.

According to the article, GMU gets around 6000 student applications for just around 270 spots, every year. Since 2003, over 2000 students have graduated from GMU and presently, the student body is made up of 36% Arabs, 32% Asians and 22% Africans and the rest from Europe and Asia. It also has 162 faculty members from 22 countries, says the article. 22% of GMU graduates are admitted to US medical schools for further training. “GMU is part of a network of four pioneering teaching hospitals that now train 19% of doctors in the country and treat nearly 1,800 patients a day,” it says.

It was a fun day out for babies and families at the annual ‘Healthy Baby Contest and Exhibition’, Dubai’s largest family fun event held at Thumbay Hospital, Dubai on Friday, 26^th February 2016. This year’s event saw the participation of more than 500 kids and close to 4000 visitors.

Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost Gulf Medical University was the Guest of Honor of the event. Mr. Thumbay Moideen – Founder President of Thumbay Group, Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay – Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group, and several other important dignitaries were also present.

The ‘Healthy Baby’ was selected on the basis of the physical and mental growth, complete immunization, general appearance of the child, as well as the parents’ knowledge about childcare. More than 500 children, falling in five different age categories participated in the competition. The age categories were: 3 months to 1 year, 1 to 2 years, 2 to 3 years, 3 to 4 years and 4 to 5 years. There were also prizes for categories like Curly Hair, Sparkling Eyes, Sunshine Smile and Chubby Cheeks, in addition to the ‘Healthy Baby’ prizes for each of the five age groups. The contest was judges by renowned pediatricians as well as experts from Thumbay Hospitals.

The ‘Healthy Baby Contest and Exhibition’ is an annual event intended to raise community awareness and to inculcate health and nutrition habits in children at an early age, for a healthy lifestyle. The contest promotes health consciousness among mothers regarding various factors affecting the health of children and detecting illness at early stages. The contest also provides parents the chance for a personal and friendly interaction with the renowned doctors of Thumbay Group’s hospitals. Judges speak to parents about parenting, growth-related issues of kids, immunization/vaccination etc.

“It is important for the parents to be aware of the child’s growth stages, and understanding his/her needs. We talk to parents and advise them on all these aspects as well as parenting. Parents need to know what is normal for their kids and what is not; they should be clear about when to worry,” said one of the contest judges. He added that this was especially important for first-time parents, who usually tend to be very anxious.

There was also an online voting photo contest for babies from 3 months to five years. Over 600 children participated in this category, and the top ten winners based on highest votes were given special prizes at the event. The raffle draw for the family air ticket to Paris held at the event was won by Dhashvath Gunasekaran.

Popular Bollywood Actress and former Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen visited Thumbay Hospital – Ajman at 11 am on Thursday, 31st March 2016. Hundreds of patients and visitors rushed to catch a glimpse of the star, as she toured the hospital’s facilities.

It was a fun-filled evening with lots of information, contests, prizes and priceless interactions for new and expectant moms who thronged Thumbay Hospital, Dubai in large numbers on Friday, 29th April 2016 to attend ‘Mom’s Day Out’, a unique annual program to entertain and enlighten the participants on pregnancy and motherhood. Around 1000 participants and a total of over 2500 visitors were present at the event.

The event was an exclusive occasion for moms to understand motherhood better through a variety of activities like expert sessions, games and contests, exhibitions and interactions. They also had the chance to win many cool prizes as part of the contests held. The event was designed as a complete and comprehensive program with activities across four zones, viz., Diet & Nutrition Zone, Awareness & Information Zone, Health & Wellness Zone and Happiness Zone. Participants included women from all over the UAE.

The event helped many participants overcome their anxieties on motherhood and clear common misconceptions on pregnancy, as they attended special talks by senior gynecologists, pediatricians, dieticians and other experts. The expert doctors stressed the importance of the special care pregnant and lactating women needed during Ramadan. A wide range of prenatal and antenatal products were also showcased and demonstrated before them. Visitors were also able to book Thumbay Hospital’s specially discounted maternity package, at the event. Prizes for the ‘Are you a Supermom?’ Facebook contest held as part of the event were also awarded to the winners.

The new 400-bed teaching hospital, a 60-chair dental hospital and a hi-tech rehabilitation centre are coming up in the campus of Gulf Medical University in Al Jurf, Ajman. These new projects, once operational, will add to the training and research facilities of students of the various colleges under Gulf Medical University which is on the fast-track to emerging as a research and innovation based medical university in the region.

The new hospital which is expected to be completed by 2017-18, will be the biggest private academic hospital in the region. It is envisioned as a state-of-the-art, purpose-built 400-bed smart facility, which will be the teaching hospital of Gulf Medical University. The hospital will be equipped with modern infrastructure and will also focus on medical tourism. It will be constructed over 3,20,000 square feet area, in four floors, and with over 120 clinics. The hospital will feature a special robotic pharmacy, a first of its kind in the region, and will have quaternary care facilities. The hospital will also have a full-fledged radiology department with PET-CT scan, a first of its kind in the northern Emirates. With the ultramodern facilities of the hospital, Thumbay Group aims to continue its tradition of providing high quality healthcare services at affordable costs. The hospital’s state-of-the-art laboratory will be connected to Thumbay Labs and CABRI (Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation – GMU’s world-class research and diagnostics facility) via an unmanned chute, to offer highly specialized tests and diagnostic facilities.

Among the new hospitals coming up, the ones in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Ghana are in progress, which will be announced in the next few months.

The upcoming dental facility will be a full-fledged dental hospital with over 60 chairs, which will have all dental specialties under one roof, in addition to teaching and training the students of GMU’s College of Dentistry. The dental hospital will be constructed over an area of 30,000 sq. feet in three floors. A hi-tech rehabilitation center hosting a unique state-of-the-art Sports Medicine, Hydrotherapy unit, GAIT Analysis lab and an Ergonomic simulation lab that will promote analytical and therapeutic services will be constructed in three floors in an area of 30,000 square feet. The center will provide specialized physiotherapy services in the fields of Musculoskeletal, Cardio-respiratory, Neurology, Pediatrics and Women’s Health. The center will also train the physical therapy students of the university.
